If You Invested $500 or More in Tesla Stock at the Beginning of 2025, Here’s How Much You’d Have Now

-

Tesla (TSLA) shareholders had a wild ride in 2025, filled with extreme highs and lows for both its stock and its CEO, Elon Musk. After the dust settled, however, you still did very well if you invested money in Tesla at the beginning of 2025. The electric vehicle (EV) maker’s stock closed at $449.72 a share on Dec. 31, 2025, giving it a gain of about 15% since the open on Jan. 2, 2025.

That kind of performance seemed unlikely back in early April, when Tesla’s stock cratered. Not only did the company face problems with its EV business, but its stock also got hit by backlash against Musk’s controversial involvement with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Fortunately for Tesla (and Musk), Wall Street has a short memory. After bottoming out, Tesla’s stock recovered. So how much would your investment be worth if you had bought Tesla stock on the first day of trading in 2025? Keep reading to find out.

Because the stock markets were closed on New Year’s Day in 2025, the first day of trading was Jan. 2. Tesla’s stock opened the year at $390.10 a share.

Here’s how much money you’d have now, based on different investment amounts.

With an initial investment of $500, here’s how much an investor would have:

  • Opening price Jan. 2, 2025: $390.10

  • No. of shares with $500 investment: 1.3

  • Closing price Jan. 7, 2026: $431.41

  • Current value: $560.83

Doubling that amount to $1,000, here’s what that investment would be worth:

  • Opening price Jan. 2, 2025: $390.10

  • No. of shares with $1,000 investment: 2.6

  • Closing price Jan. 7, 2026: $431.41

  • Current value: $1,121.66

An investor who made a $2,000 initial investment would have seen the following results:

  • Opening price Jan. 2, 2025: $390.10

  • No. of shares with $2,000 investment: 5.1

  • Closing price Jan. 7, 2026: $431.41

  • Current value: $2,200.19

A hefty $5,000 investment would’ve yielded the following:

  • Opening price Jan. 2, 2025: $390.10

  • No. of shares with $5,000 investment: 12.8

  • Closing price Jan. 7, 2026: $431.41

  • Current value: $5,522.05

And finally, here’s what a $10,000 investment in Tesla at the beginning of 2025 would look like now:

  • Opening price Jan. 2, 2025: $390.10

  • No. of shares with $10,000 investment: 25.6

  • Closing price Jan. 7, 2026: $431.41

  • Current value: $11,044.10

Perhaps more than any other high-profile company, Tesla’s fortunes are directly linked to its CEO. For proof, look no further than a new incentive-laden pay package that could make Musk the world’s first trillionaire.

That deal is a testament to Musk’s ability to convince investors he has the golden touch as a CEO even though Tesla has run into some headwinds of late.

From an operational standpoint, the company has been hit with sluggish revenue growth, declining profits and issues with its self-driving technology. “Big Short” investor Michael Burry recently called Tesla’s stock “ridiculously overvalued,” The Motley Fool reported.

So why does Tesla’s stock keep rising? Much of it has to do with the potential of non-EV businesses, such as energy generation/storage and other services, experts say.

“[A lot] depends on whether you think Tesla is a car company, a tech company or something else entirely,” Edward Corona, founder of The Options Oracle AI Trade Manager, told GOBankingRates. “If you’re betting on Elon, you’re betting on a guy who’s delivered moonshots before, but you’re also signing up for turbulence. That’s just the trade-off.”
