How the confrontation with Iran escalated into open conflict
A series of offensive strikes against Iranian military and infrastructure targets in late February marked a sharp escalation that rapidly spread across the region. The operation followed months of rising tensions and a sequence of attacks and counterattacks involving Iranian proxies, maritime incidents, and strikes on U.S. forces and partners in the Gulf.
The immediate catalyst was a coordinated military campaign that struck multiple Iranian sites. U.S. and Israeli forces carried out precision strikes aimed at degrading Iran’s missile, drone and command-and-control capabilities. Tehran responded with waves of ballistic missiles and armed drones against U.S. positions and Gulf states hosting U.S. assets, multiplying the number of countries and facilities involved.
The fighting expanded beyond direct strikes in Iran. Attacks were reported across the region — including strikes that affected airports and commercial infrastructure — and proxy elements in Lebanon and elsewhere carried out local operations. Several governments in the region felt compelled to reposition forces or to warn their citizens, producing travel disruptions and energy market shocks.
What changed on the ground
- Direct strikes on Iranian military and oil-related targets reduced Tehran’s conventional strike capacity in some areas
- Iran launched retaliatory missile and drone barrages against coalition targets and neighboring states
- Regional spillover included attacks on shipping, airports and proxy clashes in Lebanon and elsewhere
Why it matters
The campaign has reshaped regional security calculations and created uncertainty over duration and objectives. U.S. military planning has shifted to prepare for a sustained fight, while allies face pressure to choose roles or to provide basing and logistical support. The humanitarian, economic and diplomatic fallout is already affecting global energy supplies, travel, and political alliances, and the lack of a clear endgame raises questions about how and when the conflict will be resolved.
